You know when the person standing next to you, or talking to you has really smelly breath? Pretty horrible, right? But what if the person with the bad breath is you? How humiliating and embarrassing is that? You never want to be the one with the bad breath, so you’ll want to keep reading to learn how to prevent and get rid of bad breath. If you figure out a way to to it nicely, you can even pass these tips on to the smelly one next to you!

1. Dental hygiene:

It’s important to brush at least twice a day and floss once each day. This removes food residue and smelly bacteria.

2. Clean your tongue:

Lots of people don’t know how important it is to clean your tongue in order to prevent a buildup of bacteria. You can use your toothbrush to gently clean your tongue; some toothbrushes even have a tongue cleaner on the back.

3. See the dentist regularly:

Your teeth need to be professionally cleaned a couple of times a year, and a dental exam and x-rays will help keep a handle on decay, which can cause bad smells.

4. Rinse:

You can rinse with a mouthwash, but you can also try using a salt water rinse, which cleans your mouth of stinky bacteria.

5. Don’t smoke:

Smoking is a huge cause of bad breath.

6. Skip candies and gum:

The bacteria that live in your mouth will make the sugar ferment, creating odor.

7. Chew sugar-free gum:

Sugar-free mints are okay, too, but chewing gum stimulates the production of saliva, which cleanses your mouth.

8. Drink water:

Dehydration and dry mouth can give you bad breath, so drink water throughout the day to stay properly hydrated.

9. Control stress:

Believe it or not, stress can give you bad breath. Feeling stressed can affect your microbiome, creating an imbalance of good and bad bacteria in your gut, which can be a cause of smelly breath. Getting enough sleep, meditating, and doing yoga are all good ways to help reduce stress.

10. Chew on parsley:

Instead of a breath mint, try chewing on some herbs. Parsley, basil, cilantro, and mint all contain chlorophyll, which neutralizes odors.

11. Eat yogurt:

Yogurt with probiotics is good for gut health, which is a factor in preventing bad breath.

12. See your doctor:

If you feel like your breath smells bad too often and you can’t control it at all, go to your doctor for a checkup, since there are a few physical conditions that can affect the way your breath smells.
