This #SpoilYourselfSunday is also National Cocoa Day, so we couldn’t resist researching some healthy hot chocolate recipes! Here’s how to make a truly healthy hot cocoa, with tons of options, so you can go wild or just use what you have! Recipe adapted from Wellness Mama’s Healthy Hot Chocolate recipe.
- 1 cup hot unsweetened almond, coconut, or rice milk (or water!)
- 2 tablespoons raw cacao powder or non-dutched organic cocoa powder (you could also melt two small squares of dark chocolate in your mug!)
- 1 tablespoon gelatin powder
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- 1-2 teaspoons blackstrap molasses, xylitol, maple syrup, or honey (to taste)
- optional flavorings: 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon powder, turmeric powder
You can double or triple the recipe to make more than one serving. You can also throw in a tablespoon of your favorite other nutritional add-ins, like maca powder, chia seeds, or extra gelatin or cinnamon. Then blend it all up and serve with a little sprinkle of cacao nibs or spices on top! Ta-da! Who ever thought you could trick yourself into eating healthy with hot chocolate??!
Bonus! Here’s a recipe for healthy hot chocolate squares to serve your favorite picky eater – maybe you could even sneak some spinach in there or something
