If you think that you can’t eat healthy on a budget, you need to read this! Oh… it would be nice to have a private chef to shop and prepare healthy meals for you, but just because you can’t have that (sorry!) doesn’t mean you can’t maintain a healthy diet and save money, too. You just need to know how to make the most of what’s out there and these tips can help a lot!
- Stick to whole foods. Processed and prepared foods cost more, so sticking to the basics will get you more bang for your buck. Buying a whole head of lettuce is cheaper- and will give you more- than a bag of salad. It takes a little more prep work but it’s worth it in the long run.
- Watch for sales. This is an important step for anyone who want to save money. Stock up on ingredients you use all the time.
- Use coupons. There are lots of ways to get money saving coupons, like coupon websites and local papers. Rewards programs at your supermarket gets you good deals and special coupons, so make sure to sign up.
- Cook at home. It’s always more economical than eating out, and when you cook your own food you know exactly what’s in it, so you won’t be getting unwanted additives and chemicals.
- Plan meals. Planning meals for the week is a great way to eat healthy and shop smartly. It also will help you avoid turning to last minute unhealthy and expensive take-out.
- Buy in bulk. You can usually get a better price when you buy in quantity, which also ensures you have a well-stocked pantry and freezer to churn out those healthy meals. You can also cook more than you need and freeze half of it. Then you’ll have a healthy meal ready for another time- and you won’t have to go out and buy ingredients!
- Buy in season. In season produce is cheaper. It tastes great fresh in season, and you can also freeze it for later.
- Try non meat proteins. Meat can be expensive, but it’s not the only good source of protein and iron. Beans, lentils, eggs, dairy, and canned fish are also full of protein. They cost a lot less and can be the building blocks for a satisfying and nutritious meal.
- Buy cheaper cuts of meat. Cook cheaper, tougher cuts of meat in your slow cooker and you’ll never be able to tell the difference.
- Plant your own veggies and herbs. Delicious and cheap!
- Don’t spend money on junk food. Don’t let junk food purchases eat into your budget! Save your money and you won’t be tempted to eat the wrong foods. Spend on fresh fruit, air-popped popcorn and other healthy snack options.
Now you have no more excuses! Healthy eating on a budget takes a little bit of planning, but once you get used to it it’ll be a snap. Use these tips to take control of your health and your wallet!
