If you think you have to spend a lot of money to have great style, think again! The truth is that money can buy expensive clothes and accessories, but not necessarily style. In fact, there is great fashion to be had at all prices and it’s really the way you put it all together that makes it look good or not. Follow these tips and you’ll look fabulously (and expensively) stylish without spending the big bucks!
- Discount stores. It’s really important to know about the discount stores where you can score designer fashion at significant markdowns. There are great finds in Marshalls, Nordstrom Rack, DSW, and lots of others.
- Shop at thrift stores. Not only can you save a lot, but this is where to pick up those fabulous vintage treasures.
- Shop at outlets. Designers often send their overstock to outlets where you can get some great clothes at a great discount.
- Shop sales. Every stylish budget shopper knows to shop end-of-season sales for great savings! Shop for coats and boots at the end of the winter, bathing suits and summer clothes at the end of summer.
- Know what’s hot. Stay current on trends and get inspiration from fashion magazines and blogs. You’ll know what’s hot and find cool styling tips you can do yourself.
- DIY. Update older clothes you already have by doing things like cutting pants shorter or altering a dress.
- Know what looks good on you. You might love a certain style, but it’s just not for your body. Figure out what’s the most flattering on you and work it.
- Make sure things fit well. Nothing will kill your style like ill-fitting clothes. If you really love something, splurge on the tailoring so it fits perfectly and you’ll look great in it.
- Have some classic pieces. A flattering LBD (little black dress), black pumps, a great-fitting pair of jeans, and a white shirt are classics that form the foundation of great style.
- Buy a few accent pieces. You don’t need to buy an entire new wardrobe every season. Buy a few pieces you love and mix and match with what you already have for an easy and budget-friendly wardrobe upgrade.
- Accessorize. Finish a look with some fabulous accessories. Even a simple outfit gets instant pizzazz when you add some statement jewelry (costume is fine- sometimes even better than real!) like an eye-catching necklace or an armful of bangles. A great pair of shoes or a colorful scarf are some other spectacular styling options.
- Buy quality. Before you spend money on something, make sure the quality of the fabric and workmanship are good. Poor quality looks cheap and won’t last as long, either.
- Take care of your clothes. Proper cleaning and storage is essential. Washing too often will make them look old; instead, just spot clean if you need to, and freeze clothes overnight to remove odors when they get smelly. Make sure your clothes are well pressed and steamed- even expensive clothes will look terrible if they look like you slept in them. And take scuffed shoes to the shoemaker for a touch-up.
- Have some attitude! Great style really does come from inside you. So stand up straight, smile, and project confidence and style. That’s what will make you look like a million bucks!
