We’re all wired differently and that’s okay. Some of us need to be around a lot of people all the time, while some of us are more introverted- comfortable with our own company. Whichever type you are is just right, but studies show that there are many benefits all around to being social. Don’t worry if you’re an introvert; you don’t have to change your personality, just make sure to spend some time in social situations so you can get those benefits too. Here are some of the reasons that being social is good for you.
- You might live longer. Studies have shown that people with social relationships live longer than those who are isolated.
- It’s good for your immune system. You’d think that being around others would expose you to more germs, but it turns out that having social connections makes you less likely to get sick.
- Good for your blood pressure. Spending time with friends is a good way to reduce stress, and can actually help lower your blood pressure.
- It’s good for your mood. Hanging out with friends is fun, so this makes sense. Loneliness can lead to depression.
- You learn good communication skills. In order to socialize you need to be able to get along with others, which is helpful in all your relationships: friendships, romantic, work, etc.
- It’s good for your brain. Being social helps delay memory loss as we age.
- Networking. The more people you know, the broader your connections go, which can help you in your career, among other things.
- Friends influence good behaviors. If you’re friends are eating well and exercising, you’ll be more likely to follow those behaviors yourself. You can reinforce good habits in each other, and it’s always nice to have company for a walk or a trip to the gym.
- It can motivate you. There’s nothing more motivating than knowing that others believe in you.
- It’s good for your self-esteem. Knowing you’re not alone, and knowing how to interact with others is good for self-esteem and self-confidence.
- Support is always good. It’s nice to know someone has your back.
For the most part, we are social beings by nature, and we enjoy spending time with friends and family. Isn’t it nice to know that something you enjoy is also really good for you?
