Today for #SpoilYourselfSunday, we’re getting ready for the coming cool season with a little skincare maintenance that doubles as a relaxing morning ritual. Ready for this? We’re talking dry skin brushing. Do you take the time to dry brush your skin daily? If not, here are some of the top benefits of dry brushing:

  • it improves circulation throughout the body;
  • it stimulates the lymphatic system to help release toxins;
  • it exfoliates the skin to get rid of dead cells;
  • it can help you relax and relieve stress;
  • it may help reduce cellulite deposits around the body;
  • it may even improve digestion and kidney function; and
  • it feels great!

So, now that we know why we should dry brush, how do we do it? Great question. Start with the right tool: a high-quality brush with stiff, natural bristles (find some recommendations here). Most dry brushers swear by brushing in the morning before a shower (it’ll help wash away all those dead skin cells you just brushed off!), but you can brush whenever you want, even twice a day as long as you’re gentle!

Now that you have your proper setup, let’s get started. Begin at the feet and brush in long, smooth strokes toward the heart (for best results!), being careful not to apply much pressure. The bristles should be firm enough that just a little pressure will do. Work your way up and around the body, avoiding private parts and the face. If you’d like to dry brush your face, too, you’ll need a different brush for the more delicate skin.

You might find that you like using the few minutes to practice a breathing meditation, or just space out while you attend to your skincare. It’s a great opportunity to reflect on what you have to do during the day, and mentally prepare yourself for it. That’s it! Now you can enjoy your softer, smoother skin, and go about your day feeling more energized!
