I’m experiencing a little bit of self-loathing this morning. I really tried to control myself, but I got a little too comfortable with the big bag of potato chips that was in my house. I’m not even sure how it got there, since I found that the best way to prevent being controlled by the yummy, crunchy, saltiness of potato chips is to: Just. Not. Buy them! Simple enough. But I must have gone shopping hungry, or had a weak moment in the store, or thought they’d make a good snack for the kids. Who knows- I’ve blocked it out. All I know is that there they were in my pantry: a delicious crisp bag of my guiltiest pleasure- just calling out to me.

It’s okay to indulge in snacks that might not be so good for you- totally okay, in fact. But you have to be smart and I’m not smart around potato chips; once I get in there, it’s hard to pull me out. Which is why I’m going to make a suggestion here that goes against almost all money-saving philosophy: buy the small snack size bags. I know it’s economically way smarter to buy the large bags and then portion them out, and if you can trust yourself around a large bag, then by all means do this. You might even want to break up a large economy-size bag into individual portions right away, as soon as you get home from the store, so that you have you’re own pre-measured snack bags ready to go. I’ve tried it and it works for other things, but not potato chips. I know if I really have to satisfy that craving, I’m best off buying a small bag, eating it, savoring every crunchy bite, and then putting it behind me. I believe that’s money well spent in the long run, because with the way I’m feeling today, the only thing that will make me feel better about myself is probably chocolate. The expensive kind. And maybe shoes… Should have gone with the snack bag of chips.
