I’m not sure how I feel about the term “superfood.” I kind of picture a carrot flying around with a cape and I’m not really comfortable with that image. But there are certain foods that seem to top the charts in terms of health benefits, and beans, or legumes,  just happen to fit into that category. So, “superfood” or not, here are some really incredible all-around benefits of beans. Read this and make your own decision about “superfoods!” I bet you’ll be so convinced about beans and lentils, you’ll want to click here and learn how you can get a coupon for a FREE bean product from Better Bean.

  1. Beans are full of fiber: We all know how important fiber is to a healthy diet, and beans are full of it! Eating enough fiber prevents constipation and is important for heart health.
  2. Lots of vitamin B: There are a few types of B vitamins and they’re all important for energy, brain function, red blood cell formation, and more.
  3. Great source of iron: Meat and fish are good sources of iron, but that leaves vegans out in the cold. Beans are a good plant-based source of iron, which is important for producing red blood cells and giving you healthy hair, skin, and nails.
  4. High in protein: Beans are high in protein, which is great for vegans and vegetarians, as well as meat-eaters who sometimes prefer an alternative protein source.
  5. Beans can lower your risk of heart disease: People who eat beans have a lower rate of heart disease.
  6. Lower risk of cancer: Beans contain plant chemicals that can reduce cancer risk.
  7. Lower your cholesterol: Beans can lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
  8. Eating beans can help you control your weight: If you’re trying to lose weight, or just want to maintain a healthy weight, consider adding beans to your diet. They are low in fat, and because they’re high in protein and fiber, you’ll feel satisfied longer. Beans are also good at keeping your blood sugar steady and keeping your appetite under control.
  9. Beans are versatile: Beans can be enjoyed in many ways that are pretty easy to prepare. Use beans to make soups, salads, dips, hummus, and stews- even snacks! Try roasted chickpeas and you won’t miss chips. Here’s a basic recipe you’ll love!
  10. Beans are economical: Beans are way cheaper than meat. And because both canned and dried beans have long shelf lives, you can stock up and always have them around.

Of course, nothing is perfect, and one of the drawbacks to eating beans is that they can make you gassy. No one wants that, but you can help prevent gas by combining beans with an acidic ingredient (hummus, salads). If you cook dried beans, soak them overnight in water and 1/8 teaspoon of baking soda. Then rinse them well and cook. Another problem is the high sodium content in canned beans, and you can reduce that by rinsing the beans before you use them.
