Traveling is great- new experiences, change of scenery, a break from the daily grind- but it’s not always possible. Maybe you don’t have the time to get away, or there’s no one to watch the kids. Or maybe it’s just not in the budget. Sounds depressing, but it’s not! You can still get a break without going away by taking a staycation! You know what that is- you take a vacation while staying at home- and it can be really great if you do it right. If you can’t really get away, treat yourself to a weekend-long staycation and make it count. Here are some tips to help you plan a fabulous staycation:

1. Prep your home:

You’re on vacation- so no housework! Set aside some money to hire a house cleaner and have your home clean and fresh for your time off. Leave scented candles and fresh flowers around the house to make home seem more special than usual.

2. No email:

Set up your away message just like you would if you were really going away. Let people know that you will be unavailable. Delete your work email from your phone so you can really get away from the day-to-day.

3. Explore a different part of town:

Maybe you can’t really get away, but you really need a change of scene. Look into renting an Airbnb in a nearby town or even on the other side of your own town, just for a different experience. It’s less expensive than a hotel and you won’t spend money on traveling.

4. Splurge on a hotel:

I know one of the reasons for a staycation is to save money, but you might decide it’s worth it to splurge on one night in a hotel, just to make you feel pampered for a little while. And since you don’t really need a place to stay, you can be flexible and hunt for great deals.

5. Indulge in a day spa:

Treating yourself to a spa experience is another great way to spend some of the money you’ll be saving by not going on a ‘real’ vacation. Look for specials and coupon codes to keep the cost down.

6. Eat out:

You usually don’t cook when you’re away, do you? So eat out on your staycation, too. Are there restaurants you always wanted to try, but haven’t because of budget and time constraints? Now’s your time to treat yourself!

7. Be a tourist in your own city:

How many of us ever really see the sights in our own cities? Be a tourist and enjoy your own town.

8. Go on a movie or TV binge:

Create your own movie festival and have a marathon! Or binge watch a series you haven’t gotten to yet. Make some popcorn, sit down, and don’t feel guilty at all!
