This Sunday we're focusing on the DIY blowout, since we know we sure don't have the budget for a professional blowdry every week! So, from our own hair diaries, we've compiled our favorite home blowout tips and tricks to help you save money while you rock flawless, fabulous locks!
Click through to read up on our top 5 secrets for a perfect at-home blowout!

1. Choose your tools wisely!

Use a cotton shirt or microfiber towel instead of terrycloth to prevent frizz. Comb through your favorite heat protectant spray or gel with your fingers, focusing on the ends of your hair, while your hair is still wet. Before you blowdry, detangle your locks with a wide-tooth comb to prevent breakage. Then grab a wood, nylon, and/or boar bristle brush, or just use your fingers to section off and hold your hair while you blowdry. Avoid metal brushes like the plague because they'll add too much heat to your locks - and while you're at it, be sure to get a blowdryer with a low heat setting!

2. Start with your roots.

When you hop out of the shower, resist the urge to wrap your hair in a towel! Instead, use your towel to blot or use a cotton t-shirt instead to get most of the moisture out, and start with damp, not wet hair. Move out of your muggy bathroom into a cooler area with good air flow. Then clip your hair into four sections: top of the head, left and right sides, and the back of the head. Grab the section on the top of your head first and point the warm (not hot!) air at your roots. Once you're done with the roots at the top, start on the sides, moving from the front of your head to the back. To add a little extra volume, flip your hair upside down before you start blowdrying, and use a round brush to wrap your hair while you blow it dry.

3. Keep it moving!

Put on some tunes to remind yourself to move your blowdryer around instead of holding it steady over a section of hair. This will help you avoid damaging your strands by over-drying! While you're at it, make sure you're holding your blowdryer horizontally and holding your brush or hair vertically for even better results - it might take some getting used to, but it'll result in a much more natural-looking blowout. Keep your blowdryer at least 3 inches from your strands at all times, and try to stay away from the ends of your hair as much as possible.

4. Hold on tight.

While you're grooving with your blowdryer in one hand, use your other hand to hold the section of hair taut as you move the air around it. If you're using a round brush, wrap your hair tightly from the roots and pull it as taut as you can (without putting stress on the hair) to make your blowout look shiny and smooth instead of lumpy.

5. Blast it!

Once your hair is looking soft and silky, let your hair cool for a few minutes. Make sure your hair is completely dry, then switch your blowdryer to the cool setting and run it over your hair for another minute to lock in the style and give your hair a shine boost.
