Planning a Fourth of July barbecue? Fun! The point is to celebrate Independence Day with good food, good friends, and a good time, and don’t stress about the details. I know that planning a party can make me feel a little overwhelmed, and I made up my mind not to let that happen this time. I realized that if I just stick to basics, everyone will still have a great time, including me, so here’s my list of the essential BBQ must-haves:

  1. Grilling tools. The right grilling tools make everything so much easier. There are all kinds of fancy tools and accessories, but the basics are a good spatula and a pair of tongs.
  2. Hot dogs and hamburgers. Hot dogs are a no-brainer for ease, and everyone knows they’re the quintessential American barbecue food. You can easily mix up some ground meat and seasonings for your own hamburgers, or even buy them pre-shaped. And if it’s no biggie for you, marinate some chicken in Italian dressing and throw it on the grill, too.
  3. Condiments. Ketchup and mustard go without saying, but there are so many relishes and sauces that will add a lot to even the simplest BBQ.
  4. Potato salad. Easy and basic. Buy it or make your own with this classic recipe. Be safe and make sure to keep it refrigerated until all the other food is ready.
  5. Watermelon. The perfect refreshing summer dessert, and all you have to do is slice it up.
  6. S’mores. S’mores are yummy and fun! Put out the ingredients and let everyone make their own.
  7. Disposable tableware. I’m the first one to want to protect the planet, but there are times when you just have to make it easier on yourself. This is one of them.
  8. Insect repellent. Don’t get eaten up yourself! If you want to stay away from chemicals, read this for some natural insect repellent solutions.
  9. Sunscreen. If your barbecue is during the day, make sure to slather up.
  10. Lighting. For nighttime parties- for safety and ambience.
  11. Garbage bags. Make sure to clean up well so you won’t attract animals.

So, here you go – your barbecue must-haves!  You can always get more elaborate with food and decorations if you want, but as long as your barbecue includes these components, it’s sure to be a success!
